Alaska Psychology Licensure Requirements

12 AAC 60.140(a) sets the psychologist passing score at the ASPPB-recommended scaled score of 500 or higher on the computerized EPPP (or 70% on the non-computerized version). Psychological associate applicants need 450. The regulations refer only to "the EPPP" and contain no Part 1 / Part 2 (EPPP-Skills) split, so Alaska has not adopted a separate EPPP Part 2 requirement as of the July 2025 statute/regulation compilation.

Pre-doctoral: the doctoral program must include a predoctoral internship of at least 1,500 hours completed within 24 months, with at least 25% of the intern's time (minimum 375 hours) in direct client contact and at least 80% of supervision provided by a psychologist (12 AAC 60.083(a)(4)); APA-accredited programs are deemed to meet this. Post-doctoral: AS 08.86.130(a)(3) requires one year of board-approved post-doctoral supervised experience, and 12 AAC 60.080(a)(2) defines a year as not less than 1,500 clock hours completed in not less than 10 months and not more than 24 consecutive calendar months, at 20-40 hours per week. At least 80% of the supervised experience must be with a licensed psychologist or ABPP diplomate (up to 20% may be with certain other licensed professionals), and at least 50% must be face-to-face contact with patients (12 AAC 60.080(a)(4), (a)(9)). Post-doctoral supervision requires a minimum of one hour per week of individual face-to-face supervision. Post-doctoral experience may not begin in Alaska until the board approves the supervision plan and issues a temporary license (12 AAC 60.020(e)). Note: the 1,500 post-doctoral hours are the psychologist (doctoral) track; psychological associates require two years of post-master's experience.

Required

Alaska State Law and Ethics Examination — a written, objective, two-hour exam administered by the board separately from the EPPP and offered four times per year. Questions are drawn from AS 08.86, AS 47.30.655-47.30.915, 12 AAC 60, and the APA ethics code/standards. Passing score is 70%. Scheduling instructions come from Division staff after the board approves the application.

Fee: $50

Required for licensure by examination (12 AAC 60.110(g), 12 AAC 60.010(d)(2)). Applicants licensed by credentials/endorsement are licensed 'without examination' under AS 08.86.150 and the board's License by Credentials instructions (form 08-4313) do not list the State Law and Ethics Examination. The $50 figure is the 'state examination fee' in 12 AAC 02.330(8).

1. Earn a doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology (or a board-equivalent field) from a regionally accredited institution whose program meets 12 AAC 60.082 and 12 AAC 60.083, including a predoctoral internship of at least 1,500 hours completed within 24 months.
2. Before beginning post-doctoral supervised experience in Alaska, apply for a temporary psychologist license to practice under supervision and have the board approve your written supervision plan — you may not start accruing Alaska hours until it is issued.
3. Complete one year of board-approved post-doctoral supervised experience: at least 1,500 clock hours over 10 to 24 months at 20-40 hours per week, with at least 80% supervised by a licensed psychologist or ABPP diplomate, at least one hour per week of individual face-to-face supervision, and at least 50% of the experience in face-to-face patient contact.
4. Pass the EPPP with an ASPPB-recommended scaled score of 500 or higher and have your score sent to the board directly from ASPPB or the administering jurisdiction.
5. Pass Alaska's written State Law and Ethics Examination with a score of at least 70%; it is given four times a year and scheduled through Division staff after the board approves your application.
6. Submit the Psychologist License by Examination application (form 08-4113) with the $200 application fee and $500 license fee, official transcripts from every school attended, a full vita, five recommendation letters (three from psychologists/APA members/ABPP diplomates), the doctoral coursework check sheet, and the Statement of Supervised Psychological Experience.
7. Renew biennially by June 30 of odd-numbered years for $500, documenting an average of 20 continuing education hours per year, at least 3 hours of it in professional ethics and at least half obtained through live interactive programs.

Not a PSYPACT member

Alaska licenses by credentials rather than by a formal reciprocity agreement. Under AS 08.86.150, a person licensed or certified as a psychologist by another licensing authority is entitled to be licensed in Alaska without examination if they (1) hold a doctoral degree with primary emphasis on psychology satisfying AS 08.86.130 and their out-of-state examination and qualification requirements were essentially similar to or higher than Alaska's, (2) are an ABPP diplomate in good standing, or (3) are certified/registered with a board-approved credentialing organization with essentially similar or higher requirements. Applicants under route (1) must still have their EPPP score verified directly by ASPPB or the administering jurisdiction (12 AAC 60.030(a)(1)(B)(ii)), unless they were initially licensed before that jurisdiction required the EPPP. Fees are $200 application + $100 credential review + $500 license (form 08-4313). Temporary licenses to practice under supervision are not issued to credentials applicants (12 AAC 60.020(g)). Short-term options: a one-time courtesy license allows up to 30 days of practice in a 12-month period for a non-resident holding an equivalent out-of-state license and a qualifying EPPP score (12 AAC 60.035); a temporary military courtesy license is available to active-duty members and spouses for 180 days, renewable once (12 AAC 60.032); and an emergency courtesy license of up to 120 days may be issued in an urgent situation (12 AAC 60.036). PSYPACT: neither AS 08.86 nor 12 AAC 60 contains a Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact provision in the board's July 2025 statutes-and-regulations compilation, and the compact is not mentioned in the board's application materials — so no PSYPACT authority to practice in Alaska was found. Telepsychology practice requires registration with Alaska's Telemedicine Business Registry in addition to the psychologist license.
