Arizona Psychology Licensure Requirements

A.R.S. 32-2072(A) sets the passing standard as a scaled score of 500 on the computer-based EPPP (or 70% on the older written form) - the ASPPB-recommended cut score. IMPORTANT: Arizona requires EPPP Part 1 (Knowledge) ONLY. The Board was an early adopter of EPPP Part 2 from November 1, 2020 to February 10, 2023, but voted on February 10, 2023 to suspend the Part 2 requirement, effective immediately.

Arizona requires 3,000 total supervised professional experience hours. At least 1,500 must be an internship meeting A.R.S. 32-2071(F) (APA-accredited, APPIC member, or an equivalent organized training program; completed within 24 consecutive months). The remaining 1,500 may be ANY combination of supervised preinternship (practicum) experience, additional internship hours, and supervised postdoctoral experience - so a postdoctoral year is permitted but is NOT independently required. No more than 1,500 hours may be postdoctoral, and no more than 1,500 hours may be preinternship practicum. Credit is capped at 40 hours of experience per week.

Discretionary. A.R.S. 32-2072(B) and A.A.C. R4-26-204(C)(2) authorize - but do not mandate - an 'additional examination' covering Arizona law, the practice of psychology, ethical conduct, and assessment/treatment practices. The Board's published applicant instructions and EPPP pages describe only the EPPP; no standing jurisprudence exam is advertised. Treated as unverified rather than 'not required'.

A.R.S. 32-2067(A)(9) authorizes a fee of up to $350 for 'any additional examination', but no such fee appears on the Board's current published fee schedule.

1. Earn a doctoral degree in clinical, counseling, school/educational, or another board-accepted applied psychology field from a regionally accredited institution, including the required core content areas, dissertation, and residency (A.R.S. 32-2071(A), (K)); an APA- or PCSAS-accredited program satisfies most of these criteria automatically.
2. Complete 3,000 hours of supervised professional experience: at least 1,500 through a qualifying internship, plus 1,500 more from any combination of preinternship practicum, additional internship, or postdoctoral supervision.
3. Apply for an Arizona DPS fingerprint clearance card (or submit proof you applied), which is required for every application.
4. Submit the Psychologist Application for Exam and/or Licensure through the Board's online Applicant Portal, pay the $350 fee, and arrange primary-source verification of your transcripts and supervised training.
5. After Board approval, register through ASPPB's Certemy platform and pass EPPP Part 1 with a scaled score of at least 500 (Part 2 is not required in Arizona).
6. Once the Board receives your passing score and your file is complete, the Board issues your full independent license; renew it biennially with continuing education.

PSYPACT member

Arizona has no blanket reciprocity, but offers several endorsement routes. Under A.R.S. 32-2071.01(D), an applicant already licensed at the independent level in another U.S. or Canadian jurisdiction is deemed to meet the education/training requirement if they hold an ASPPB Certificate of Professional Qualification (CPQ), are credentialed by the National Register with at least five years of independent doctoral-level practice, or are an ABPP diplomate. A.R.S. 32-2072(D) exempts ABPP diplomates and CPQ holders from the national examination. Long-practising applicants may also qualify by experience: 20 years of licensed practice can substitute for the internship requirement (32-2071(I)) and 10 years for the practicum/postdoctoral portion (32-2071(J)). The Board also accepts a Psychologist Application for Licensure by Credential and a Psychologist Application for Licensure by Universal Recognition (Arizona's out-of-state license recognition law). Arizona is also a PSYPACT member state under A.R.S. 32-2087, so psychologists holding an active E.Passport/APIT from the PSYPACT Commission may provide telepsychology into Arizona, and TAP holders may practise temporarily in person for up to 30 days, without an Arizona licence. Out-of-state psychologists without PSYPACT authority may instead join Arizona's telehealth registry (A.R.S. 36-3606, $600).
