Louisiana Psychology Licensure Requirements

LAC 46:LXIII.503 sets the passing criterion as a scaled score of 500 on the computer-administered EPPP (or 70 percent correct on the retired paper-and-pencil version). The board's own Steps Toward Licensure form repeats "A minimum score of 500 is required." Louisiana has NOT moved to an EPPP Part 1-only model: the EPPP is only the WRITTEN portion of the examination, and a separate board-administered ORAL examination must also be passed (La. R.S. 37:2356(A)(7); LAC 46:LXIII.105.H). A candidate has a maximum of four years from admission to candidacy to pass the written examination (LAC 46:LXIII.105.D); effective June 20, 2026 the board removed its cap on the number of EPPP attempts, though ASPPB still limits candidates to four attempts per rolling 12 months.

LAC 46:LXIII.703.A requires two years of full-time (4,000 hours) supervised, documented experience. Up to one year full-time (2,000 hours) of an acceptable predoctoral internship may be applied toward that total; all remaining supervision must be post-doctoral, so at least 2,000 hours must be postdoctoral. Each assignment credited must be at least 500 hours and at least half-time, and all supervised practice must be completed within five calendar years. Minimum general professional supervision is one hour per week, one-to-one (LAC 46:LXIII.707.A). To be acceptable, the internship experience must be a minimum of 1,500 hours completed within 24 months (LAC 46:LXIII.305). Applicants licensed as a doctoral-level psychologist for at least five years in another jurisdiction with no discipline or criminal record may have one year (2,000 hours) of the postdoctoral requirement waived (La. R.S. 37:2356(A)(6); board Steps Toward Licensure, "5-year exemption").

Required

Louisiana Jurisprudence Examination — an open-registration online exam taken through Canvas; the registration link is sent after the application, notarized statement, and application fee are received. Scores are valid for three years.

The board's Steps Toward Licensure (Licensed Psychologist) form lists the Louisiana Jurisprudence Examination as required for "all applications," and LAC 46:LXIII.601 lists a $75 Jurisprudence Examination Fee. The rules separately and expressly require it for reciprocity applicants (LAC 46:LXIII.201.B), temporary registration applicants (LAC 46:LXIII.1001.C, which also sets the three-year score validity), military applicants (LAC 46:LXIII.1003.E), and provisional licensure applicants. This is separate from the board's oral examination, which is an additional $250 and is taken after the EPPP, supervision, and jurisprudence exam are complete.

1. Earn a doctoral degree with a major in psychology from a board-approved school - APA-accredited, or ASPPB/National Register designated, with at least one continuous academic year of full-time residency on campus.
2. Create an account on the LSBEP licensing portal (lsbepportal.com), submit the online application with the $200 fee, and arrange for transcripts, internship documentation, references, and a state and federal criminal background check to be sent to the board.
3. Pass the Louisiana Jurisprudence Examination online through Canvas ($75); if you will accrue postdoctoral hours under supervision, file a Supervised Practice Plan and consider applying for a Provisional License so you can sit the EPPP early.
4. Complete two years of full-time (4,000 hours) supervised experience - up to 2,000 hours may come from an acceptable predoctoral internship, and the remaining hours (at least 2,000) must be postdoctoral, finished within five calendar years.
5. Once admitted to candidacy, pass the EPPP with a scaled score of at least 500; you have four years from admission to candidacy to do so.
6. Accept the board's written invitation to the oral examination ($250) and pass it; on approval of all requirements the board issues the Licensed Psychologist credential.
7. Renew annually by July 31 ($400) and meet the continuing professional development requirements in LAC 46:LXIII Chapter 8.

Not a PSYPACT member

Reciprocity (LAC 46:LXIII.201): the board will license an applicant who is licensed by another ASPPB member jurisdiction whose requirements are the substantial equivalent of Louisiana's and which has a similar reciprocal agreement with Louisiana, who has five years of satisfactory licensed professional experience, who passed written and oral examinations administered by that board, whose doctoral program involved at least one continuous academic year of full-time on-campus residency, and who has no discipline or pending complaints. Alternatively, an applicant qualifies for reciprocity by holding the ASPPB Certificate of Professional Qualification in Psychology (CPQ) or by being a current ABPP diplomate in good standing. All reciprocity applicants must pass the Louisiana Jurisprudence Examination before a license is issued, submit fingerprints for a criminal history check, and may be required to meet with the board; the board's Steps form notes reciprocity applicants appear for a face-to-face meeting but are exempt from the oral examination unless they have never passed an oral examination for psychology licensure. Endorsement (LAC 46:LXIII.203) is available under the Welcome Home Act, La. R.S. 37:51 et seq., to an applicant relocating to and residing in Louisiana who has been licensed in good standing as a psychologist by another ASPPB member jurisdiction for one year and proves Louisiana residency. A 5-year exemption can waive one year (2,000 hours) of the postdoctoral supervision requirement for someone licensed at the doctoral level elsewhere for at least five years with a clean record. Nonresident psychologists licensed for independent doctoral-level practice in a state that grants Louisiana licensees a like privilege may practice in Louisiana for up to 30 days per calendar year under a temporary registration (LAC 46:LXIII.1001), which itself requires passing the Louisiana Jurisprudence Examination. PSYPACT: Louisiana was not a PSYPACT jurisdiction at the time of writing but has enacted it. The board's PSYPACT notice states that House Bill 486 of the 2026 Regular Session was signed and enacted as Act 302, authorizing Louisiana's participation in PSYPACT effective January 1, 2028, and warns that until that date psychologists licensed elsewhere may not practice in Louisiana through PSYPACT and Louisiana licensees may not practice under PSYPACT authority in other states.
