Nevada Psychology Licensure Requirements

The Nevada State Board of Psychological Examiners states the required passing score for both EPPP Part 1 and EPPP Part 2 is 500 (the ASPPB-recommended scaled score). EPPP Part 1 is required of all licensure applicants; applicants who already passed the EPPP for licensure in another jurisdiction do not retake it. EPPP Part 2 is required only for applicants who did not graduate from an APA-accredited doctoral program AND are not currently licensed in another U.S. jurisdiction or have been licensed less than five years. NRS 641.0243 defines the 'national examination' as the EPPP administered by ASPPB; neither NRS 641 nor NAC 641 fixes a numeric cut score.

NRS 641.170(1)(d) requires at least 2 years of experience, 1 year of which must be postdoctoral. NAC 641.080(1) requires 2 years of supervised, documented experience equivalent to full-time. NAC 641.080(2)(b) sets the postdoctoral year at not less than 1,750 hours. The predoctoral year must be an APA-accredited doctoral internship or a Board-approved equivalent; NAC 641.080(4)(b)(2) sets the 2,000-hour figure for a non-APA-accredited equivalent internship, and the Board's own FAQ states the requirement as '2,000 predoctoral hours' and '1,750 postdoctoral hours' for all applicants. Reduced track: under NAC 641.080(3), an applicant already licensed at least 5 years in another U.S. jurisdiction with no disciplinary history needs each of the two years to be not less than 1,500 hours. A registered psychological assistant may apply to sit for the Nevada State Exam only after completing 1,400 of the 1,750 postdoctoral hours.

Required

Nevada State Jurisprudence and Ethics Exam — an online, open-book examination with a proctoring component, administered by the Board. It covers Nevada laws and regulations plus professional ethics. Passing score is 75%. Required of every licensure applicant, including endorsement/expedited applicants and those licensed 20+ years elsewhere.

Fee: $200 per attempt

NAC 641.112 requires the Board to administer a state examination to each applicant for a psychologist license. Retake limits (NAC 641.112(4)): fail once or twice, may retake; fail a third time, need Board approval and a written remediation plan for a fourth attempt; fail four or more times, the application is deemed denied and the applicant must wait at least 18 months before requesting permission to reapply. NAC 641.019 sets the statutory fee as 'actual costs to the Board plus $100'; the Board's FAQ states the current charge is $200 per exam attempt and that fees are re-evaluated each biennium.

1. Earn a doctoral degree in psychology from an APA-accredited program, or a doctoral-level program the Board deems substantially equivalent under NAC 641.061/641.062 (master's-level practice is not licensable in Nevada).
2. Complete the predoctoral year: 2,000 hours in an APA-accredited doctoral internship or a Board-approved equivalent internship.
3. Submit the Board's Applicant Screening Information Form with the $150 non-refundable application fee; the Board reviews it in about 5-10 business days and routes you either to the full ASPPB PLUS application or to the abbreviated/expedited pathway.
4. Register with the Board as a psychological trainee, intern or assistant as applicable, and complete 1,750 postdoctoral supervised hours under a Nevada-licensed supervisor who meets NAC 641.1519, submitting supervision logs quarterly.
5. Pass the EPPP Part 1 with a scaled score of 500 (and EPPP Part 2, also 500, if you did not graduate from an APA-accredited program and are not licensed elsewhere for five or more years).
6. Pass the Nevada State Jurisprudence and Ethics Exam (online, open-book, proctored; 75% to pass; $200 per attempt) and clear the fingerprint-based criminal background check — both are required of every applicant.
7. Pay the $25 initial license fee plus the prorated biennial renewal fee, then renew by December 31 of each even-numbered year with 30 hours of continuing education (6 ethics, 2 suicide prevention, 6 cultural competency; no more than 15 home-study hours).

PSYPACT member

Nevada grants no true reciprocity — the Board's licensure page states plainly that 'Nevada does not have reciprocity with any other state or province,' and NAC 641.020 refuses to accept another state's licensure for endorsement if it was acquired through a grandfather clause. Endorsement pathways do exist: NRS 641.196 authorizes an expedited license by endorsement for an applicant holding a valid, unrestricted psychologist license in D.C. or any U.S. state or territory, with no discipline, no open investigation and no malpractice liability, decided within 45 days of a complete application. The Board applies this expedited route to applicants who hold a CPQ, ABPP or NRHSPP credential or who have been actively licensed 20 or more years (see also NAC 641.025), and an abbreviated route for those licensed five or more years (NAC 641.028, and the reduced 1,500-hours-per-year experience track in NAC 641.080(3)). NRS 641.190 additionally lets the Board license without examination a psychologist from a state whose requirements it finds at least equivalent, and NRS 641.180(3) lets the Board waive the national examination for someone licensed elsewhere with 10+ years of experience who is an ABPP diplomate or APA fellow. Important caveat: the Board states the Nevada State Examination and a criminal background check are required for ALL applicants, including certificate holders and those licensed 20+ years. Nevada has no temporary or limited license. Nevada is a PSYPACT member state — the compact is enacted at NRS 641.227 — so an out-of-state psychologist may provide telepsychology to clients located in Nevada only with a Nevada license or a PSYPACT E.Passport plus Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology.
