Rhode Island Psychology Licensure Requirements

Rhode Island does not print a number in rule: 216-RICR-40-05-15 s 15.8.1 adopts the ASPPB recommended passing score by reference, which is the scaled score of 500. The Part requires only the EPPP and does not reference an EPPP Part 2 (Skills) requirement.

Two years of supervised experience totalling a minimum of 3,000 hours, at least 1,500 of which must be post-doctoral (one of the two years must be post-doctoral). Separately, a 1,500-hour supervised internship must be completed after the equivalent of two years of full-time graduate study; this is the pre-doctoral figure. Supervision must be by a psychologist licensed in the state where the experience was obtained, in a setting affiliated with a regionally accredited college or university or APA-approved, and must include at least one hour per week of one-to-one conference. Pre- and post-doctoral experience must be distinct from any practicum required for academic coursework.

Not required

No jurisprudence, state-law, or professional-standards examination is required. The rule states the licensure exam requirement exhaustively: s 15.4(A)(5) conditions licensure on passing 'an examination in accordance with s 15.8.1', and s 15.8.1 specifies only the EPPP. The word 'jurisprudence' does not appear anywhere in 216-RICR-40-05-15, and the Department of Health consolidated fee schedule (216-RICR-10-05-2, effective 03/25/2026) lists no jurisprudence or state-law exam fee under its PSYCHOLOGY heading.

1. Earn a doctoral degree in psychology from a regionally accredited college or university whose program was APA-accredited, or a doctorate in an allied field that meets the Board's equivalency standards in s 15.5.1.
2. Complete a 1,500-hour supervised internship after finishing the equivalent of two years of full-time graduate study.
3. Complete two years and at least 3,000 hours of supervised experience, at least 1,500 hours of it post-doctoral, under a psychologist licensed in the jurisdiction where the experience is obtained.
4. If you need to practise while accumulating post-doctoral hours, apply for a temporary permit ($120), valid two years and renewable once for one year, available after the doctorate and 1,500 hours of supervision.
5. Pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) at the ASPPB recommended passing score and have ASPPB send results directly to the Board.
6. File the application with the $230 fee, official transcripts, internship affidavits, pre- and post-doctoral supervised practice forms, a Curriculum Summary Form if your programme was not APA-approved, and verification of good standing in any other state where you hold a licence.
7. Renew biennially by 1 July of each even-numbered year with a $230 fee, attesting to 24 continuing education credits completed over the preceding two years.

Rhode Island offers licensure without examination under R.I. Gen. Laws s 5-44-11 for an applicant licensed or certified as a psychologist in another state, US territory, or foreign country where the Board determines the requirements are substantially equivalent to Rhode Island's, or for a person certified after examination by the American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology where the Board finds that examination substantially equivalent to or exceeding its own. In addition, rule 15.4(B) deems an applicant holding the ASPPB Certificate of Professional Qualification (CPQ) or the National Register Health Service Provider in Psychology credential to have met the licensure requirements of the Part. Rhode Island is a PSYPACT state (R.I. Gen. Laws Chapter 5-44.1): rule 15.8.4 lets RI licensees practise interjurisdictional telepsychology with an active ASPPB e-Passport while physically located in the home state of licensure, and practise temporarily in person in other compact states with an active Interjurisdictional Practice Certificate.
